Can we please talk about...

how excited I am for school?

Yes? Ok good.

I am very very excited. (What an understatement!)

This is always such a fun time of year. I get to go buy all my new colorful notebooks and folders (this year I got blue, pink, & yellow!). I get to buy (and decorate) a new planner that is just waiting to be filled with homework assignments, deadlines, and the emails of fellow classmates. I also get to buy expensive books required for my courses, but we won't talk about that. I just love organizing all of my notebooks and figuring everything out for the semester ahead.

I think something that makes it so exciting is the anticipation of the unknown. I don't really know what this semester has in store for me and I can't wait to find out. I love perusing the syllabus handed out for each class and mapping out the work I have ahead of me. I will discover what classes I love, which professors are ruthless, what textbooks I just can't put down, and what subjects I want to learn more about. Learning new things is just plain fun. I can't get enough!

I also just love my major. Sociology is the best. Hands down! I get to learn about all sorts of things! Issues in Family Sociology, Sociology of Gender, Race & Minorities, Juvenille Delinquency, Social Deviance, Sociology of Medicine, etc.- there are so many classes! I love all of the options. I get to personalize my major and everything I want it to include.

Are you excited for school now, too? I hope so!

So here is to an awesome school year... my senior year of college!

WOOHOO!
Am I the only one that uses pretty postage stamps as fun stickers?

a little whimsy

i just finished beautifying this canvas bag.
(and i love it!) it needed a little something.

i have been working on it for the past couple of nights and now i think it is finished... we will see. i love the whimsical feel of the flowers. don't we all need a little bit more whimsy in life? i think so. you should let your mind run free and beautify one, too! the bag is perfect for carrying my notebooks to school.
(i will have to wait for another post to tell you how excited i am for school. yeah- i am that excited. i can't wait!)

And the winner is...

Mandy who said, "Please enter me." Congratulations Mandy! Woohoo! E-mail me (kjclover09[at]aol[dot]com) your address and I will mail you a pair of super cute earrings! (or drop them off if you live close)

For all the losers people that didn't win, I'm sorry. I used the True Random Number Generator at random.org which claims that they offer "true random numbers" instead of "pseudo-random, which means they are a generated in a predictable fashion using a mathematical formula." The program spit out number 13 for me and Mandy was the 13th person to comment.

But if you are completely distraught and still want some earrings... Visit my shop on Etsy or come over to my place to buy some.

Thanks for participating.

I survived...

My little brother reported to the MTC today.
But first, we all went out to breakfast.
We stuffed our faces, talked, and laughed (of course).

Then we headed to the temple grounds to take some pictures with our missionary.

Then with hugs and tears, we had to send him off...

Whew... it was tough.

I couldn't be more proud of Sam.

He is off to serve the Lord for two years.

Florida is one lucky state and these two years better fly by. (I already wrote him a letter.)

every party needs party hats

On Friday we headed to Huntington Beach with my family...

one of our favorite places. It was also Riley's day of birth, so we celebrated with hot dogs and s'mores around the fire.

Here's the birthday boy! Rye is the big 1-7!
(I was loving the hot dogs and my matching outfit. stripes & plaid anyone? )

We bought the hats as a joke...but then we all actually wore them. We thought we were pretty funny. As soon as we put the hats on, the people at the next pit started singing happy birthday. It was magical.
Lesson Learned - Party hats are essential for every birthday.

Best idea (ever!) for some tasty s'mores- use reese's peanut butter cups instead of hershey's chocolate. So good!

We hit the beach again the next day for some fun in the sun. See more here.

trees in distress

The leaves have been falling from the trees around our building I work in for about a month. The rumor was that someone from the Grounds Crew sprayed the trees with pesticide instead of fertilizer, which killed the leaves and made it look like we were in the middle of October. These leaves have sure become the topic to discuss. People come to the front desk just to see what's wrong with the trees.

Well, our whole building received this email from the Dean yesterday...

We have received a visit from the campus Grounds Office with the results of studies and tests conducted on the honey locust trees surrounding our building. As you have noticed (and MANY have called Grounds) the leaves have turned orange and begun dropping very early this year. Tissue samples, soil samples and related materials have been submitted for scientific examination and the results are both good and questionable.

The good results are that the trees are still alive and the various components are healthy and will produce leaves in the normal fashion next year. The questionable part is what caused the unusual event to begin with. No one can determine that cause although several possible theories have been proposed. One idea is a settling of some petroleum products in the ground and the other is the “earthquake sensitive” nature of this particular variety of trees. The trigger for the “earthquake” proposal is the pile-driving activities north of the Marriott Center that may be distressing the trees. No one know for certain but we can all rest easier knowing the trees will come back next spring as normal.

Therefore, all calls to the Grounds Office describing the trees can be curtailed and they can spend less time answering our inquiries.

Thanks for being so observant and concerned.

...you're welcome

p.s. i was not one of the "MANY" who called the grounds office.

Sundance loves you

Last night Jeremy and I headed up to Sundance. We wanted to take the lift up the mountain under the full moon (maybe we got the idea from cjane). We bought sandwiches and headed up the canyon. We walked around for a bit and took some pictures, until it got dark enough to go up the mountain. With hot chocolate complete with whip cream in hand, we hopped into a chair. We thouroughly enjoyed the ride talking, cuddling, laughing, and promising eachother we would bring a big blanket next time. It was a beautiful night with Jeremy. The moon refused to make her appearance. :( Too many clouds. I guess we will have to go again for the full moon in September.
I can't wait!
