announcing...

that i will be MIA until approximately wednesday.

don't have too much fun without me.

just heading back to the beloved east coast. and not taking my computer... it is just heavy and such a hassle going through security at airports. i only like to take it when jeremy will carry it, but i will be flying solo, so my computer stays. i'm sad to be making the long trek by myself, but jeremy thinks its cool that i am on a business trip. he's funny. i have been pondering what to wear for my interview... i was originally thinking crazy tights, teal pencil skirt, grey polka dot shirt, lime green cardigan, purple flats. yeah? i might need to tone it down a bit.

well, i am off to pack... we leave for the airport early in the morning.

ciao guys!

did you know...

that I am a Rubik's Cube fanatic?

some of you do... i posted about it a looooooong time ago when i first started this thing (seriously... it was my 5th post back in 07 before i even knew jeremy).

my new record is 1 minute and 28 seconds and i have gone through 4 Rubik's cubes (when you time yourself and race people, the stickers start to wear and peel off). riley and i even MC'd at a talent show and we raced in front of everyone. he beat me... which i am ok with since he taught me how to solve it.

at the height of my rubik's cube obsession, i ALWAYS had one in my purse. i carried one everywhere! now i just have my cube at work on my desk - it's good to get distracted every once in a while to play with it. well, my buddies at work have been playing with it and asking how to do it. so i taught them. amber and janna can solve it now and i taught my boss, too. even one administrator downstairs caught wind of our escapades today and wants to learn, too. it's hilarious!

so if you want to learn how to solve the Rubik's cube... i can teach you. just saying.

it's a skill you need to have. will smith gets a job in the "pursuit of happyness" because he can solve it. yeah, you definitely need to go buy one. i could make this a part-time job. advertise to charge a flat rate for your success no matter how long it takes and you gain the skills to master the cube.

Rubik's cube lessons... i like it!

Cinderella Ate My Daughter

I saw an article today about this book:

Cinderella Ate My Daughter

The article consisted of a quick look at the book plus an interview with the author. This looks like an awesome sociological read. It may be something you would roll your eyes at... but even so, I still find it fascinating. It is interesting to see how media and entertainment can shape the views and thinking patterns of children and even toddlers. I think it is important to talk to kids about the sneaky tactics of the media and advertising today... or else we will have a generation that believes you have to be a size 0 or else you are fat. Or that girls are for cleaning & cooking and boys are for mowing the lawn & building things. I can build things... Jeremy can cook and I want our future kiddies to be able to explore all of the hobbies they are interested in, not just the ones deemed gender appropriate. I like books that make me think and evaluate the things that influence me. The book has been officially added to my Amazon wish list along with some other great sociological reads I stumbled upon.

poor kid

riley broke his back yesterday.

don't worry... he will make a full recovery!

he broke it while skiing at brian head. he went off of a big jump going backwards and over shot the landing. he landed hard on his back and went unconscious for a while. then he was life flighted to the hospital in cedar city. he has some small fractures and then a bigger fracture on his back and he says it hurts like crazy. he has to wear the brace for a while and then go see an orthopedic surgeon.

we are so glad he's ok!!

roll out

this morning in my workout class i gracefully rolled my right ankle.

we were doing fancy things requiring fancy footwork on the -previously cool, now dangerous- bosu and i lost my footing, rolled the ankle to the outside, and completely fell to the ground. i continued into dead cockroach position and did some punches (ya know, to keep my heart rate up), until i realized i was really hurt.

the instructor saw me on the ground and yelled into her microphone, "are you ok?" and ran over to me. well, hello to the 30+ people in the workout class... yes, i just rolled my ankle and fell. i guess i am not coordinated this morning. then she ran out of the room saying, "you have to fill out a paper." she came back with a girl and a piece of paper- an injury report. i hopped out to the bench in the hall, the instructor went back to teaching, and the girl says to me, "i don't know what's going on," well... there's not that much going on- i rolled my ankle. the girl handed me the paper and a pen, and drifted back from whence she came. in the meantime, my buddy rebecca came out to see if she could help and she went to find ice while i documented my injury.

good thing rebecca was there. we go back... way back. all the way to the second grade (when she moved in across the street from me and we became fast friends). she's also an EMT, so she took good care of me. she ran, literally, all the way down the long hall and got me a bag of ice while i sat in the hall filling out the injury report. sorry i ruined your workout, rebecca... but thank you for helping me. i would have been a sad, lonely, and injured girl without you. now i am just injured.

my mom rocks...

but we knew that already. :)

my mom has taught many things over the years. well, she pretty much taught me everything i know (from tying my shoe to driving a stick shift). she's the greatest... and i really mean it.

there is one thing though, that i consider a unique, but very valuable lesson she has taught me.

lately, when jeremy and i get burgers and fries for dinner (which is all the time... because we love it!!), i can't ever finish my burger. i get about half way done and i just can't eat anymore. i think the reason why is because i am finally internalizing this important lesson my momma taught me growing up (and mostly by example):

always eat the fries first.

she would always eat the fries first. i remember one time i asked her if she should eat her burger first and she proclaimed how essential it is to eat the fries first, "they are better hot and fresh, katie. hot and fresh!" made sense to me... and i am following suit. i usually take one bite of my burger and then zero in on those delicious fries. it's a necessity... otherwise they get cold or even warm and that still isn't good enough. who wants cold fries? NOBODY! and who wants hot fries? EVERYBODY! you just have to eat those fries when they are hot and fresh... and dipped in spicy fry sauce. beautiful. the cheeseburger is good too, but the fries definitely steal the show. yep, that's the only way to go... my mom taught me so.

notice the fry in hand...
and the sandwich untouched.

i'm a good learner.

i have a dream...

that we can all bowl together!

but really, i do have a dream... of peace. not necessarily of world peace, but more
peace in our lives and in dealing with other people. i think we can all aim for more peace.

we went bowling today with jeremy's buds from freshman year. jeremy got first and i got second... i didn't know we were such serious bowlers. i of course used an orange bowling ball!

cloudy with a chance of...

meatballs!

we had sweet and sour meatballs over rice with green beans for dinner.

it's one of our favorites. who knew meatballs could be so easy?! not i.

here's the recipe:

1 lb ground beef
3/4 c. rolled oats
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/2 c. finely chopped onion
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp salt
few grains pepper
1 tsp worcestershire sauce

combine and mix well. form about 20 meatballs (i use our cookie scoop)
and place in 9 x 13 dish. bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

sauce:
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. vinegar
1 tsp prepared mustard
1/4 c. bbq sauce
1 tsp worcestershire sauce
1 can crushed pineapple, drained

combine ingredients and pour over meatballs for
last 10 minutes of cooking.

we love them!

capsulating time

today on my lunch break i made a time capsule.

i got the idea from here.

i collected things around the apartment from the year 2010 and put them in this trusty jar.

it contains:
a picture of jeremy and me, silly bands (that i got in a happy meal), my tassel from graduation, a letter sent from sammy, a letter riley randomly wrote me, city pass from san francisco, ferry ticket from seattle, a fortune cookie fortune, a business card from temple university, and a ticket stub from seeing tangled.

the time capsule's home is on our book shelf and i LOVE it. i want to make one every 5 years - every year would be way too many and i want more than 4 by the year 2040, so every 10 years is just not cutting it.

hurry and make one, too!

from 22 to 90 in 3 days

today i have the agility of a 90 year old.

yes i do. my early morning workout classes have started again, and boy
my body feels it. seriously, i hurt all over- my glutes, hamies, quads,
triceps, abs, pecs, etc. i kind of hobble around. it's really great. and i
have power pump tomorrow... hopefully i can make it there.

but...

i really do love the classes! it is always fun to make friends
and then encourage each other to keep coming at the early hour. they
switched up the power pump teacher this semester, so that's
kind of fun. i am a fan of change. this teacher has a style of lifting that is less
"body builder-ish"and more "let's get toned." i like it because we
don't use oodles and oodlesof equipment; we use our
own body weight to build the muscles.

anyways... i am excited and sore (it's a good sore, though) - and totally
ravenous. when i work out, i am hungry all day it seems. it's nuts.

just kidding

i guess my cross-country flights aren't quite over.

today i got invited to interview in philadelphia for their marriage and family therapy program. wow! i got an interview! i might actually get my master's degree. aahhhhhhh! the interview is an all day thing (like jeremy's cool interviews), so i fly out again in two and half weeks. the east coast just can't keep me away.

boston...

was wonderful. i LOVE it... i really do. can i go back??

thursday
we arrived late at night... but not so late that i went to bed right away.

friday
the boys interviewed, so the girls (amber and i) meandered around the city until we found ourselves shopping. it was great. we met the boys later and had dinner.

saturday
we started the morning with donuts and hot chocolate, watched some kids fall while ice skating on the pond, and followed the freedom trail (the red line) until our tired leggies couldn't carry us any farther.

the cemetery was so cool... check out the skulls on the headstones.

lunch in the italian district... glorious idea.

we saw so many historical sights... cool stuff.

i bought the cool hat for $10 from the sweetest man. he's my favorite. tufts dental school is on the right... it's pretty cool. it has orange stairs- i told jeremy it was a sign: we have to move to boston! if we do though... i am upgrading my winter gear!

sunday
we slowly made our way back to utah. it only took 12 hours. we are glad to be home and hoping we won't need to take any cross-country flights for a little while.
