Let's Go...

Fly a Kite!

Saturday we had a little family outing to the park.  We walked the 1 mile loop and then had just enough wind to fly a kite - which is on our summer bucket list.  Gwen slept through the whole thing will snuggled in the Solly Wrap.

"Gwen! We are flying a kite!"

Our Summer

I have spent the last few days thinking about our summer bucket list. Today I bought a poster for 33 cents at the dollar store and went to town and now we have this beauty to my left hanging on our fridge.

I wanted to set some goals or at least write down the things we wanted to make sure that we do this summer. I am sure the whirlwind of inviting a baby into a home, can lead to time feeling like it slips away.  Hopefully, this list of our favorite summer activities can help us feel like we did some pretty great things during the craziest summer of our lives.

The Best Gift Ever

I am convinced that the best gift you could ever give someone is a pinata full of amazing candy, which is why I ordered this beauty off of Amazon for our friend Courtney.

I was so excited about the idea that I think I ordered it about 6 weeks ago when I heard there was going to be a going away party for her.  She's heading off to BYU Idaho to study Web Design.  I added the sign around the unicorn's neck to try and make it a little less random.  It reads, "May your next adventures be as MAGICAL as you!"  We will miss her and be rooting for her from Vermont!

******

Turns out she LOVED it! Instagram told me so:

See?  Greatest Gift Ever!

Pumpkin Shopping

Saturday was a pretty lazy day.  We cleaned our place, watched football, and I didn't shower until about 1:00.  We figured we should try to get out of the house and pumpkin shopping was the perfect reason.  We went to the Sugar Shack down the road (where they make their own maple syrup!!) and their pumpkins were beautiful!! Seriously, almost everyone was exactly what you would expect a pumpkin to be.  It was even buy one get one free because the owner couldn't bare to see the perfect pumpkins sitting out there without good homes.  We got three for $12(!!), one for each of us to carve and a cool white one to add some variety.

Then we went to Banana Republic Outlet and got some killer deals with our coupons and Gap rewards, and we always LOVE getting a good deal.  Then we came home, made a delicious dinner, and watched more football in our pajamas.  It was just the Saturday we needed.

Cake Gallery

The coolest thing happened to me yesterday at the Cake Gallery, a local jewelry shop.  Jeremy bought me a necklace from the store for my birthday.  I didn't love it and I am not one to hold onto things I don't love.  Maybe some people will think that is kind of rude of me, but I think it makes a lot of sense.  He knew he was going out on a limb and even told the owner it was a birthday gift and that I might be back in to exchange the necklace.  And that is exactly what I did.

The owner, Meike (pronounced Micah), and I chatted as I tried on about ten necklaces until we found the perfect pair, a gold disk and the perfect gem.  I was going for some smaller, layering pieces and we found just the two to make my heart sing.  I was trying to keep the total close to what Jeremy originally spent, but I ended up owing her $25.  We went to the register to make the jewelry-match-made-in-heaven official and she asked how much cash I had.  I pulled out a $5 and said. "I can go get more cash."  She took the $5 and said, "Happy Birthday!"

I was almost speechless and super grateful.  I told her she was the coolest ever and that I would always come back to her shop.  Sooooo, everyone... head over to Cake Gallery immediately (she's right on Main Street in Bennington), or I guess you can wait and buy the prettiest locally made Vermont souvenir you could ever have when you come visit me.   Thanks Meike!  You ROCK!

Around here...

I have been coloring and sipping hot chocolate...

Playing Tenzi and other games with friends...

Rock climbing and earning some painful blisters...
(will the calluses ever come??)

And shooting some hoops with Jeremy.
(I'm working on my left-handed lay-ups.  They are tough.)

January is a weird thing.  Not much is happening and it still goes by so fast.

out of doors

i spent a bulk of the weekend out of doors and that is just the way i like it.

friday
bonfire in the woods with s'mores and great company.  we tried to see the northern lights which was not successful despite all the hype.  i guess i will have to keep that on the bucket list.

saturday
we slept in and then rented the bikes again for another biking adventure.  we found a paved trail that went through a few close towns.  we also found an empty park and threw the frisbee around for a while.  the clouds look so ominous.  we eventually got some rain, but we were home by then.

and that is how we weekend.

new specs

i ordered some new glasses last friday after i visited warby parker on newbury street.  that store was a dream.  i found these blue beauties and i had to have them.  and then had to patiently wait for them to come in the mail.

 well, today they came:

and i love them.  they are the walker glasses in canton blue.  they had so many tempting options, but i went with my gut.  i'm so glad i ignored reason and didn't get a more neutral pair. i love anything that's a bit on the bold side and these are perfect.

best case scenario

are you ready for a long drawn out story described in excruciating detail?

i thought so.  let's get started.

yesterday, i had to stop at pricerite for 6 gallons of 1% milk to take with me to work.  it's about 12:00 when i get out of the store and i have just enough time to get to work by 12:30.  i load the milk in the backseat and go to start the car... and it doesn't turn over.  it doesn't even make a sound.  i take the keys out and put them back in, hoping it was a fluke.  it still doesn't start.

my mind starts racing.  do i call AAA?  that will take forever, i don't have the membership card, jeremy does.  do i call jeremy?  he can't do anything to help me, he's at school. it would just make him worry.  do i start asking people around me to jump my car?  i don't have jumper cables.  oh there is a firestone auto place next door, should i start there?  the milk is going to spoil!  i'm going to be late!  ahhhhhh!

unsure of what to do, i take a moment to say a silent prayer.  always my go to in a situation like this.  you know, one of those please-help-me-think-clearly-and-take-care-of-this-quickly prayers sandwiched between things i'm grateful for.  after my earnest supplication, i try one more time to start the car seeing if the answer to my prayer is in the form of my car miraculously functioning.  still nothing, so i text my supervisor to tell her "i have the milk. my car won't start. i will be late.  i don't know how late."

then i call AAA.  they tell me they can't help me unless jeremy is with the car since the membership is in his name.  i tell them it is impossible for him to be at the car (it's our only car and he's in the city).  they tell me i can pay $68 to add my name to the membership and that it will take an hour for someone to come help me.  i tell them thanks and no thanks, i will try something else and call back if i am that desperate.

then i get out of my car and ask the gentleman about to get into the car next to me if he has cables and would be able to jump me.  he says cables? and seems very confused and gets in his car.  he may not have known english.  i eye the lady about to get into her car in front of me and i totally judge her (tsk tsk), assuming she doesn't have the cables or the time to jump my car.

then i grab my belongings and walk over to the firestone tire, hoping the milk won't curdle in the oppressive heat.  i relay my saga to a nice man with awesome glasses and he asks if i have called AAA.  i report that bit of the story as well and he says the same thing happened to him once and his wife had to call them and tell a little fib (that she was with the car, but had to leave and that's why he was there instead) to get help.  i call jeremy to see if he can call AAA and he doesn't answer.

the nice man with awesome glasses sees that jeremy didn't pick up.  he looks around and asks what my car is and looks to see if he can spot it from the store.  he decides it is close enough, tells his co-worker he's going to take a look, grabs the magical box that starts cars, and we head outside.

he takes a look under the hood and immediately says, "yeah you need a new battery."  he explains some car stuff to me about the relationship between the alternator and the battery while he hooks the cables up.  i hand him he keys and the car starts right up.  he takes the cables off and it is still running. hooray, the battery still has some juice.

he tells me to not stop until i am at a place that give me a new battery or else the car will not start again.  i ask if he can give me one right now and tell him that there is also a toyota dealership across the street from where i work.  he says "if you gotta go you gotta go" because he knew i had work and he said that toyota batteries have a better warranty.  so i tell him thank you about a bazillion times (i am so happy at this point i think i could have kissed him) and hit the road at 12:18.

on my way, i tell siri to call the toyota place across the street from my work.  they tell me they can get me a new battery right away and to drop it off whenever.  i call my mom next to tell her the crazy story so far and how everything is working out quite nicely.  as i get closer to work (it was about a 25 minute drive), i call cassandra and ask if she can come get the milk because i can't turn my car off.

i arrive in the parking lot at 12:41 (only ten minutes late!) and unload the milk while my car continues to run.  i pass off the heavy load and tell cassandra and nellie i will be back shortly.  i drive across the street and pull up to the service department and wait in line to pull in... and my car dies.  the window is stuck down. the car won't start. the line of cars in front of me has dissipated. i figure this is as good as it's going to get and step out of my car.

an employee sees me walking towards him and asks me to pull up all of the way. i laugh as i tell them my car died in that exact spot and needs to be jumped.  he disappears and another employee tells me to pull up all the way and i tell him the same thing.  luckily, there is no one else showing up so my immobile car is not that big of an inconvenience.  one guy goes to the car, one guy takes me inside to meet with the delightful emily rose.

she starts typing my information into the computer and i overhear one of the guys from outside, "it died again."  i think that this whole thing is quite hilarious and can't stop smiling.  emily rose comments, "you seem to be in a pretty good mood for your car breaking down."  i tell her this is working out great because i work right across the street, it really is the best case scenario.

i call jeremy at this point to see if we need an oil change while we have it in the shop, i can never remember the timing on these things.  he says sure and asks why?  i quickly tell him that the car died, i am at toyota, and i will tell him the juicy details later.  emily rose and i chat about this and that while she gets my stuff all squared away.  and then i am good to go and she will call me when it is done. before i know it, i am walking back to work and it is only 12:53.

i start my work day, catching up on emails, meeting with patients, and writing notes. i get a voicemail at 1:30 saying my car was all fixed and ready to be picked up.  now that is fast.  i end up walking over at about 3:00 to pick up the silver stallion.  i chat with emily rose to get some updates on my car's health and pay for their kind services.  and i am out.  done.  with a car that runs.  and a bunch of new friends at firestone tire and toyota.

i am such a lucky girl!

let's recap the miracles of the day shall we:

1.  that i bought the milk this week for work.  usually natalie does.  if i hadn't, my car would have not started tuesday night at 8:30 pm when things are closed, rather than at 12:00 with a firestone tire next door and a nice man with awesome glasses to jump it for me.

2.  that i called AAA first.  it seemed to be a futile move since they couldn't do much for me, but if i hadn't called them first, the nice man with awesome glasses at firestone would have recommended i call them.  instead i was able to tell him i tried that and it wasn't helpful.  he took pity on me was willing to help a sister out.  (i think i will take him some donuts.)

3.  that my car didn't die while i was dropping off the milk (or at a stop light, or while we were in vermont, etc).  serious miracle here.  how would i have gotten it across the street?  it hung on just long enough for me to get where i needed to go: the entrance of the service department at toyota.  amazing.

4.  that there is a toyota dealership across from my work. i was able to drop off the car and pick it up with only slight disruptions to my work day.  so convenient and friendly.  they totally rock.

5.  that everything happened so quickly.  how amazing is it that my car breaks down, gets jumped, i make it to work, and take it to get fixed all within an hour??!  and 25 of those minutes were spent on the highway. considering the events, i wasn't that late to work and i was able to meet with my patients, etc, etc.

6.  i'm sure there are other miracles that i just can't see right now or that i may never recognize.

God was watching out for me and answered my prayers in such a profound way.  I know that God is real.  He knows me, He cares about me.  He is involved in the details of my life.  And for that, I am so grateful.

out of retirement

saturday afternoon my friend called us to see if we wanted to play some soccer on their co-ed team.  the team is made up of tufts dental students so we would fit right in.  it's outdoor, 11 versus 11 (this is real soccer!), and the first game of the season.  they were down a girl and need 4 on the field at all times.  so... suddenly i become a VIP.

it has been 7 years since we played soccer, the last time was for BYU intramurals while we were dating.  with some mixture of hesitation, zeal, nerves, and gusto, we decided to just go for it. we weren't sure we would actually help the team, but we were certainly up for a good time. and with the sunny weather, why not run around outside for a while?  we mustered up our courage and old soccer gear, stashed under the bed and in deep dark closets, and carpooled with our buddies to the game.

i took my spot as left mid-fielder, my favorite!  the whistle blew and we were off. within the first 5 minutes, i was going for the ball and suddenly this girl bounces off of me, falls to the ground, and rolls to a stop gasping for air.  i didn't even see her coming and apparently i knocked the wind out of her.  the whistle was blown and the other team got a free kick.

my first thought, "it's good to be back."  my second thought, "oh, i'm supposed to make sure she's ok."  my third thought, "well, she ran into me..."  don't worry, she was fine.  i said the polite remarks and she was up and running in no time - i'm not completely heartless on the field.

all in all, i would say the game was a major success.  i had some good plays, some bad plays, some grass stains, whole bunch of fun, and we won!!  my mistakes increased as my exhaustion increased, which is fair, since it has been quite a while, my gear is ancient, and i had to play the entire game. only four girls showed... so we were in the whole time while the boys had 3 subs.  lucky dogs.

i had so much fun, i pretty much haven't stopped talking about soccer since.

i think we will join the league.

lunar eclipse: FAIL

the blood moon.

i wanted to see it but decided that sleep took precedent, so i planned on missing out.  i guess i really wanted to see it because i didn't set an alarm and i subconsciously woke up for it anyway.  true story.  i woke up at 3:30 this morning and decided i had to check it out.

i rolled out of bed and let jeremy know i was going outside to see the blood moon.  he responded with a groggy, "whaaaaat?" and i assured him i would be right back after i saw the moon.  so i ran up the stairs to the parking garage and what did i find?

clouds.

lots and lots of clouds.  so i went down stairs to see if it was closer to the horizon and maybe a building was blocking my view.  and no dice.  just lots of clouds (not even any other people trying to see the lunar eclipse). the clouds definitely had a reddish hue to them, so i had to take what i could get and i ran back up the stairs to go to bed. plus it was super windy and a tad chilly.

after all that running around and i didn't even get to see it.  i guess i will have to take my chances in october (the next blood moon is scheduled to take place on october 8th).  we will have to see if the clouds cooperate for me then.

how we weekend

yesterday was dreamy.

we slept in.
we bought delicious food (translation: we went grocery shopping).
we played tennis for two hours in the glorious sun.

we watched some office episodes while chowing down our lunch.
we wandered a book store and bought flowers (just because).

we made gf pizza (and it was soooo good).
and we bonfired it up with s'mores and good friends.
sidenote: gf grahams are just not the same

it was all around lovely and i have a feeling future saturdays are going to be just as wonderful (jeremy doesn't have to study for tests anymore, just boards.  he will focus on clinical work from here on out). this gorgeous weather is so refreshing.

rise and shout

we headed to the birthplace of basketball to cheer on BYU playing UMass Amherst.

there was quite the showing of BYU fans (the place was sold out) and we cheered our hearts out with our friends.  it ended in a loss, but it was a good time all the same.  we had amazing seats and we even made it on the jumbo tron.  holler!

my new toy

a long board!!

i took the plunge and just bought it!  after my post about wanting one (a conversation we have been having for years), jeremy started to come around to the idea.  it helped when i assured him i didn't want to fly down any huge hills, just cruise around (safely).  so i capitalized on his change of heart and bought one.  i forgot to update my parents on the process and they weren't too thrilled.  my mom was a little more in the loop, although still in denial, and she had to calm my dad down with the "she's-an-adult-and-gets-to-make-her-own-decisions-talk" when he found out.  this is the message i got at 1:00 am the night after i bought it:

"I love you Katie. Please wear a helmet and elbow pads and gloves and bubble wrap. Daddy"

my cute dad, always watching out for my safety.
he'd make us wear helmets while sledding when we were little. :)

well, i bought the board online, so i had to wait for it to ship to me. of course it came while i was out of town and then it rained all day yesterday so there was no chance of busting it out to start practicing.  but today is GORGEOUS, so this morning i took it on its first ride.  i watched some how-to videos before diving in (made mostly by 12 year old boys) to get some tips. then i ventured to the top of the parking garage and hopped on.  it's slow going, but i am better at it than i thought i would be - those years of snowboarding seem to have paid off.  the hardest part for me is stopping, but i can worry about that later.

what a day!

what a fun day, really!

i put in a call to quaker,
because a whole box of instant maple and brown sugar oatmeal was not so maple and brown sugary.  so after suffering through quite a bit of the box i decided to do something about it.  i called the number on the box for "comments and questions" (or complaints and concerns in reality) and told the sweet lady on the phone of my tragic breakfast saga.  she apologized for my ruined breakfasts, took the box information and my information, and promised coupons for a replacement and other quaker treats would be on their way.  what wonderful customer service?  she was quite helpful and the whole experience makes me want to eat more quaker stuff.

i made a visit to our beautiful library.
it's a gorgeous building, complete with fireplaces!

i love reading!  especially FREEEE books.  my goal is to read one book a week.  i have this whole routine going right now that i just love.  it was slow going at first because this particular library is pretty small and they rarely have the books i want to read.  but my friend Janet, the dear librarian, orders the books from different libraries in the area and then just gives me a call when they arrive.  so now i go every other week to: take back the two books i read, pick up the two books that i put on hold last time, and to put two more books on hold for next time.  it's a great system! and Janet is just the nicest.

i also booked a HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE!
in new hamsphire!

remember when i wishlist wednesday-ed it years ago??  well, i figured now was a good time to make my dreams come true.  you know... why not?  so i gathered my graduation monies and booked a sunrise hot air balloon ride in august complete with a picnic afterwards.  it's going to be AMAZING!  charles is our pilot and he is sure friendly.  i told him jeremy is afraid of heights and he assured me that some people get in the basket kicking and screaming and by the end they want to go again.  he also told me all about how being afraid of heights is different then being afraid of falling and that jeremy was probably afraid of falling. he went on about how when you are attached to something on the ground the fear of falling is more real than when you are not (so in an airplane, hot air balloon, etc) so it shouldn't be a big deal.  i'm not really sure i understood, but he assured me jeremy would be fine and offered to talk to him to answer any questions.  charles has been flying balloons for 20 years and totally knows his stuff and i REALLY want to go!  so i asked jeremy if he could handle it and after some unfair pressure from me, he said to just go ahead and book it.  he loves me.  in the mean time we will be working on exposure therapy, so we can get him ready for this wonderful adventure.  i am so jazzed about it.

i also completed a french braid for the first time.
can you believe my luck?!  it must be a fluke.
especially since i consider myself hair impaired.

i have understood the concept of french braiding, but i have never been able to do it, especially on myself.  i don't know what came over me when i was getting ready for work, but i thought i would attempt a french braid.  to my surprise i was able to get through the whole thing without fuddling it up.  i was so excited that i took this picture at work and sent it to my mom with , "Look mom!  I did that!"  after i sent the message, i felt a little like i was 5 years old.  you know... just showing my mom the cool tricks i can do.

get on this bandwagon

now that i don't have to read for school... i have been reading for FUN! and it's the best.  i love reading.  i finished about 4 books in 4 weeks.  the hard part is that i get so sad when i finish a book (am i the only one?), so i guess i remedy that by reading more and more.  if you have any good suggestion please send them my way!  if you need suggestions, please read divergent, and then insurgent.  or you might want to wait and read them in october because that is when the third book comes out, ready for it... allegiant, and i am dying to get a hold of it already.  i finished both of them in four days and jeremy just finished the first one.  oh and the movie comes out in march.  i'm telling you it is good.  get on this bandwagon before there is too much hype (because too much hype turns me off of a good thing and i don't want you to miss this). next in line for me: the great gatsby, some flavia de luce, and maisie dobbs.

flying solo

it's jeremy's spring break,
which means it's his turn to fly out to see his parents.
so i'm flying solo for the week.

tonight i...
worked on my last paper of grad school (wish i finished it).
enjoyed a kids meal at chipotle.  best $4.55 spent ever.
wandered around target and dreamed of an endless shoe budget.
caught up on new girl and the office through the good ole internet.
got a chick flick from red box to watch late into the night
while i munch on cadbury minis.

all the while... i'm missing my boy.

the snow is coming!
and we are heading out in the early morn to embark on our planned adventure to maine.  we are hoping to cross-country ski and have a blast.  we may get snowed in, but hey, they have a pool.  i better get packing!

in the mail

while in yellowstone i discovered my deep love and appreciation for buffalo.

so naturally, i wanted this beautiful buffalo print as a souvenir.

it arrived the other day and i still just LOVE it! i can't wait to get it framed.
the photographer even signed the back for me:

it says, "To my fellow buffalo lover, Katie."
yeah, he's pretty cool.
